A Solid State Transformer, or SST, combines controlled power electronic conversion with high-frequency isolation. It changes voltage and can convert between AC and DC while providing controllable interfaces for the wider electrical system.

SST can create a controlled conversion path between a medium-voltage source and the required AC or DC distribution bus. This can reduce the number of separate conversion interfaces in some architectures and enable bidirectional or multi-port operation where the project requires it.

An SST is a power electronic conversion system that combines controlled conversion stages with high-frequency isolation to change voltage and, where required, convert between AC and DC.
A conventional transformer changes AC voltage through line-frequency magnetic coupling. An SST adds actively controlled conversion, allowing project-specific AC or DC interfaces and system control functions.
MV to DC conversion connects a medium-voltage AC source to a defined DC bus through controlled and isolated power conversion stages. Voltage level, grounding, protection and redundancy must be designed as one system.
An SST can provide a direct medium-voltage conversion path to a required DC bus and support an integrated DC distribution architecture. Suitability depends on the complete electrical design.
